Thousands of Ugandans unite for the 11th annual Airtel-Kabaka Birthday Run, showcasing a powerful display of unity in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Held under the theme “Men against HIV/AIDS to save the Girl Child” at Lubiri, this run not only kicks off the celebrations for the Kabaka of Buganda but also serves as a platform to champion better public health across Uganda.
Since its inception in 2003, the Kabaka Birthday Run has symbolized more than just a celebration of life; it’s a collective effort to combat diseases within communities. With tangible results against sickle cell disease and fistula, the focus of the past two editions has been on eradicating the spread of HIV/AIDS, with a bold aim of achieving an AIDS-free future by 2030.
Manoj Murali, Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, commends Ugandans for their unwavering support towards improving health. He emphasizes the partnership’s dedication to sustainability through initiatives like Airtel Cares, which bolster sectors crucial for Ugandans’ wellbeing.
The remarkable decline in HIV infections among newborns, from 20,000 cases in 2010 to 5,900 in 2022, signifies Uganda’s progress in combating the epidemic. Data from the Uganda AIDS Commission and UNAIDS further corroborate this positive trend, showing decreases in overall new infections and deaths attributed to HIV/AIDS.
Addressing the runners, Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda, applauds their spirit of love and support. He highlights their contribution not only to the Kabaka’s birthday celebrations but also to the pivotal health drive aiming to end HIV/AIDS by 2030. Their participation reinforces the Kabaka’s role as a goodwill ambassador for HIV/AIDS awareness in Uganda, showing that unity and action can pave the way for a healthier future.
