A Police Officer attached to Anti-Theft Stock Unit (ASTU) died after a horrific motor accident which happened on sunday in Kitgum district.
The accident that involved a Police Double Cabin Pick-up registration UP4809 had two other police officers get seriously injured when the car overturned.
The deceased was identified as Comstable Stephen Ojimam who also doubled as the unit’s clerk and body guard to ASTU Commandant Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buruhani Belabamuzare.Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson revealed to URN on Monday that the vehicle had six occupants,three constables and three other Senior Police Officers.Okema dded that the officers were from Abim via Lapono in Agago district heading to Kitgum.
According to Okema,the driver of the speeding vehicle avoided knocking a woman riding a bicycle on a narrow road and subsequently lost control causing the car to overturn three times.
SSP Buruhai,the ASTU Commandant and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Lydia Amuge were critically injured.The accident happened at Guda Trading Center,Namukora sub-county North East of Kitgum town at around 4:00pm.
The injured officers were first rushed to Namukora Health Center III,later to Kitgum Government hospital and St.Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu district for medical attention.
However,in the afternoon ASP Amuge was airlifted from St.Mary’s hospital Lacor to National Referral hospital Mulago alongside SSP Buruhani.Police say Amuge’s condition needs brain scanning which can only be done from Kampala.
Police authorities in Kitgum first kept the accident concealed to journalists.when contacted,the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson told URN that this has been the first major road accident involving police officers in the region
