President Yoweri Museveni has lauded Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga for promoting tourism in Busoga sub region.
“I thank the Right Honourable Kadaga for promoting tourism in Busoga, which has some very great attractions like the Source of River Nile, that cannot be found anywhere else in the world,” said Mr Museveni after climbing Kagulu Rock in Buyende District at the weekends.
In the company of the Kyabazinga, His Highness Wilberforce Gabula and Speaker Kadaga, the president joined hundreds of tourism enthusiasts to climb Kagulu Rock which rises 3,600ft above sea level.
According to President Museveni, Kagulu Rock is a unique tourist attraction because of the adventure that it gives to those who dare to climb it and the rich cultural history it embeds.
He said the government will handle the issue of fixing roads leading to some of these tourist sites. “However, we do not need to borrow money to do this. We might have to re-arrange our budget and focus on what is critical. Whereas I appreciate the importance of tourism, it cannot transform every individual. I therefore encourage the people of Busoga, who are outside tourism, to engage in commercial agriculture in order to defeat poverty,” he added.
He also congratulated the winners of Busoga Miss Tourism contest; Ruth Kitamirike, Anita Mutesi, and Peninah Nabirye, whom he crowned after the rock climbing expedition.
In her speech Speaker Kadaga tasked government to return Busoga kingdom property (Ebyaiffe) like it did for the Buganda Kingdom, among others.
