Sheikh Ahmad Mukasa, the former Mufti of the Interim administration based at Kibuli has died. Sheikh Mukasa died this morning at some hospital in Bwebajja along Kampala- Entebbe Highway following a stroke.
His son, Hajj Hamza Sebunya said they had taken their father to the hospital for physiotherapy.
He explains that his father has been under the care of Dr Kibiriga, a US based Ugandan doctor.
Sebunya says a funeral prayer will be held for their late father at Kibuli Mosque this afternoon before his body is transported to his ancestral home in Mende Kalema in Wakiso district for burial at 4pm.
Sheikh Ahmad Mukasa was born to Hajj Adam Kasule and Amina Namayanja in 1934 at Kirugaruga Kakiri in the then Busiro County currently Wakiso district. He went to Kisekke and sons Primary School and Mende Kalema memorial School for his primary education.
He stopped in primary six and switched to Katuumu in Luweero in 1950 to concentrate on his religious studies where he graduated as a sheikh in 1960. He went on to teach at Mende Kalema memorial school, Kiroro Primary, Kayunga SS and Kibuli SS.
He also served as the Kibuli county sheikh and Imam of Kibuli Mosque for eight years. In 1972, Sheikh Mukasa joined Uganda Muslim Supreme Council where he served with all the sitting Muftis with the exception of the incumbent, Sheikh Shaban Ramadan Mubaje.
In 1993, Sheikh Mukasa was elected interim Mufti of Uganda at a Muslim unity conference chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge, Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba in Mbarara district.
However, the late Sheikh Saad Ibrahim Luwemba, the then Mufti of Uganda protested the move challenging the legality of the meeting, which elected Mukasa. As a result, Sheikh Mukasa set up his administration at Kibuli Mosque.
