Court in Kampala has remanded a man who allegedly killed the commander of Kyebando Police Post Francis Kato.
Happy Mwesigye, a driver aged 39, appeared before the court but he was not allowed to make any plea to the charges because murder is a capital offence that can only be tried by the High Court.
Particulars of the offence states that on May 17, 2018 at Kyebando along the Northern Bypass in Kampala district, Mwesigye and others still at large with malice aforethought murdered Assistant Superintendent of Police Kato.
“You shall not take plea because this is a capital offence that can only be heard in the High Court. However you have a right to bail in the High Court,” the presiding magistrate Ms Beatrice Kainza told the suspect.
State prosecutor Ms Lydia Batiibwe informed court that investigations into the case were still ongoing and sought an adjournment. The court remanded Mwesigye to July 3 for mention of his case.
According to the court documents, the police officer was knocked dead by an unidentified car while he was returning from duty at Kira Road Police Station where he had worked as duty officer. He was returning to his duty beat at Kyebando Police Post when he met his death.
