The commission of inquiry into land matters on Monday grilled the chairperson of the NRM entrepreneur’s league,Robert Mwesigwa, who is said to have received sh 4b from the Uganda land fund illegally.
The commission said Mwesigwa didn’t own the land for which he received the money.
The commission described Mwesigwa as a broker who did not deserve the money, because he was acting on behalf of another individual known as Daniel Walugembe, whom he alleges was the rightful owner of land.
The commission chairperson Justice Catherine Bamugemereire says the land fund needs to be restructured because of the complaints around its failure to do what it was created for.
The commission believes that Mwesigwa got the said money because of his connections with top government officials.
According to the commission, government has debt of Shs 150 billion meant to compensate people being evicted from land that they rightfully own because the money from the fund ends up in the wrong hands yet those who are rightfully entitled have been left out with nothing.
