Today Burundi is voting in a referendum proposing constitutional changes that could extend the president’s rule until 2034.
Over Five million people registered to vote in the referendum amid fears of violence due to President Pierre Nkurunziza’s efforts to prolong his stay in power despite widespread opposition.
If the referendum vote is passed, the constitution will be amended to extend the president’s term from five to seven years which change will allow president Nkurunziza to stand for more terms after his current one ends.
