When the President implemented the second Lockdown during the second wave of Covid-19 which lasted for a period of 42days, the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja launched the disbursement of Covid-19 relief funds to the vulnerable Ugandans through the use of mobile money.
According to the office of the Prime Minister, the targeted beneficiaries were about 500,000 people and they were to receive shs. 100,000/- through MTN and Airtel telecom money transfer services.
Appearing before the Public Accounts and the Local Government committees of Parliament, Henry Musasizi, the State Minister for Finance stated that shs. 2.854 billion was spent on costs of distributing the money among the vulnerables which included mobile money charges.
When the Chairperson of the local Government Accounts Committee, Ojara Martin Mapenduzi asked for the accountability on how almost shs 3 billion was spent only on costs, Minister Musasizi asked for more time to collect the required data and thus is set to reappear before the committees on Wednesday 11th August 2021.
